Dance Dance Revolution Is Here!

October 20th, 2006

Dance Dance Revolution spawned an arcade dancing craze that is eight years strong, inspiring countless knock-offs and tricking gamers worldwide into exerting more than their thumbs. Now, this groundbreaking classic has taken its rightful place at Ground Kontrol!

“DDR” is a music rhythm game which challenges you to step forward, backward, left, and right according to a pattern of arrows, in time with the beat of a song. Like most classic games, its simple concept allows new players to jump right in. You'd better start at Beginner or Light difficulty, though; at the tougher Standard and Heavy levels, the dance moves come fast and furious! Experienced DDR freaks, meanwhile, can skip straight to the relentless Nonstop and Challenge modes.

Ours is a 2-player DDR Extreme Japanese version with 240 songs, including classics like "Cartoon Heroes (Speedy Mix)", "PARANOiA Survivor MAX," and the deceptively challenging "? (SAKURA)." We've already unlocked all of the hidden tracks!

You can find it in our upstairs lounge...and you'll find that it plays better than any other DDR in the area, thanks to Ground Kontrol's dedication to presenting the best games in the best possible condition.

All ages are welcome to stop in and dance from Noon to 7PM daily. If you're 21 or older, welcome to the only public place in town where you can drink and DDR! But, please: Dance Responsibly.

Excellent new games join the Ground Kontrol family

August 2006

Portland's widest pinball selection now includes:

  • Doctor Who: The only pinball table that spans time, space, and television series!
  • Space Jam: Not since "Demolition Man" has classic cinema played pinball so well!
  • Lord of the Rings: Forget the hairy feet and wizard's staff, you can save Middle-Earth with flippers!
  • White Water: Speed through raging rapids and drive Bigfoot nuts with this table's star, "Wet Willie"!
  • South Park: Kickass! Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, Chef, and the rest of the gang fill this game with as much lewd, crude humor as you can stand!
  • Theatre of Magic: Powered by real magic. Amazing! Mystifying!
  • Rocky and Bullwinkle: Hokey smoke! A nostalgic cartoon trip disguised as a modern pinball table!

On the video side, we have:

  • Track and Field, a dynamic sports game that involves the player both physically and mentally in competition. Combing the physical challenge of button mashing with the skill of timing jumps and throws, playing is fun for both new and experienced players.
  • Rampage: World Tour, sequel to the original 1986 giant-monster classic. Take the form of a giant ape, werewolf, or lizard and jump, punch, and kick your way across cities throughout the world!

PedalPalooza Comes To Ground Kontrol

Friday, June 16th, 2006

With so many Ground Kontrol employees (and one owner) commuting by bike, it's only fitting that we participate in PedalPalooza, Portland and Vancouver's “2 weeks of bike fun!”

We'll provide a guided tour of the greatest pinball machines and videogame games ever made, including plenty of opportunities to test your skill playing them, as part of the Interactive Museum Tour.

To join in the fun, bike to Coffee Time on Friday, June 16th at 2PM. And bring quarters!

Ground Kontrol featured in High Score Documentary

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

High Score, an independent documentary partially shot at Ground Kontrol, follows Bill Carlton's quest to achieve the highest Missile Command score of all time. Part character study, part hero's journey, it's an entertaining summary of the highs and lows that one man endures to be the best.

A SXSW Audience Award winner, High Score was screened in Portland as part of the Longbaugh Film Festival at 2:45PM on Saturday, April 8th at The Laurelhurst Theatre.

After the screening, festivities continued at Ground Kontrol's High Score party, with Bill and director Jeremy Mack in attendance as customers competed for high scores on their favorite videogames and listened to music by artists featured on the soundtrack.

New Game Layout!

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

Today the Ground Kontrol crew undertook the massive task of rearranging the 51 video game cabinets on GK's ground floor. The new layout is more open and provides more paths for getting to your favorite video games. It also allows us to show off more of the fantastic sideart that decorates some of the game cabinets. And don't forget, there are more video games upstairs, along with Portland's biggest and best selection of pinball machines!
