The Warp Zone – Our Temporary Home! Beginning December 1

First, the most important piece of news: Beginning Wednesday, December 1 at 9:30pm, Ground Kontrol will be temporarily relocated to 32 NW 5th Ave., less than one block away in the Goldsmith Building on the corner of NW 5th & Couch. For a Google Map of the location, click here!

Here’s why: In order to remodel our current space, we need to get everything out of the way! We’ll be demolishing some walls, creating new ones, installing new flooring, lighting, etc.  Dust and debris can shorten a game’s lifespan, and most significantly, our customers can’t play games while sledgehammers are swinging above their heads! (Although that sorta sounds like Wrecking Crew…)

We’re calling this temporary home The Warp Zone, but we’re bringing as much of the awesome Ground Kontrol experience possible along for the inter-dimensional trip: Our tremendous selection of arcade games and pinball, along with beer & wine service after 5pm, will still be available.

For a quick update on how the Ground Kontrol 3.0 remodel is progressing, please check out this blog post from The CEO. At every stage, we’ve encountered a new obstacle to overcome or puzzle to solve, fortunately, that’s what video game and pinball geeks are good at! With the help of Jessica Helgerson Interior Design and Lackey Construction, we still plan to bring you an even more amazing arcade experience in a couple of months.

So, remember: Beginning December 1st, when you arrive at Ground Kontrol’s permanent address, 511 NW Couch St., you’ll be greeted with directions to the Ground Kontrol Warp Zone.  It’s simple: Turn east, cross NW 5th Ave., turn south, and cross NW Couch St. Congratulations: You’re there!

More On GK 3.0

Some people have asked – if we’re not expanding, then why are we remodeling?

We know some of you love GK just the way it is, but we feel like it could be even better.  Things the remodel will improve:

  • The Bar – some people want liquor, and we can’t serve that without food.
  • Food – sometimes you work up an appetite playing NBA Jam, and we can’t serve that without a kitchen.
  • Seating – we’re adding a dedicated lounge area near the bar.  The tables and seating will be unlike anything you’ve seen.
  • Restrooms – we’re hoping our new restrooms will make you forget how sad our current ones are.
  • Flooring – our carpet doesn’t handle spills too well, so we’re going with LEED-certified recycled rubber flooring.
  • Ambience – TRON is one of our big influences, and our new look will put you in the TRON universe.

Sneak peak pics soon!

Ground Kontrol 3.0 Update: Bad News, Good News

What’s up with Ground Kontrol’s remodel plans? They’re still moving ahead, but we’ve encountered our share of obstacles along the way. Please read The CEO’s latest post for an update on Ground Kontrol 3.0!

Thanks for your patience, everyone!

8-Bit Calavera Art Installation – Opens Thursday November 4

The Autumn Society (a world-wide collective of artists) and Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade are proud to present 8-Bit Calavera, an art installation featuring 40 Nintendo Entertainment System cartridges hand-painted with “Day of the Dead” themes by 40 artists, assembled in the shape of a pixel skull.

The Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos (or “Day of the Dead”) is typically celebrated with toys, masks, sugar skulls and art inspired by and in honor of the dead.  The Spanish word for skull, calavera, is also used to describe any art representing a skull.  The holiday is celebrated by many in the U.S., and the art has evolved with the passing of generations.  In that spirit, we are excited to present one of the most unique Day of the Dead art shows ever seen!

8-Bit Calavera will debut this First Thursday, November 4, at 7pm. It will be on display on Ground Kontrol’s stage through the month of November. The paintings will also be individually priced for sale.

Our tremendous thanks to The Autumn Society and its artists for making this happen!

We at Ground Kontrol are obviously big fans of retro gaming, and Portland’s Retro Gaming Expo is no exception! Now in its fifth year, PRGE has welcomed Ground Kontrol to participate in their show since the first one in 2006. We’ve bought, sold, traded and talked classic games with fellow vendors and enthusiasts as the show continued to grow in size. For the past few years, we’ve also invited attendees to congregate at Ground Kontrol after the expo’s close. This year, that simply wasn’t enough – so we’ve got three nights of PRGE fun planned at Ground Kontrol!

Thursday, September 16, our Third Thursday Free Play Party will feature special PRGE giveaways and contests. In addition to free play on all of our games (for one low cover), you’ll be able to win PRGE passes and t-shirts in console tournaments and other giveaways. Doors open for free play at 5pm, PRGE giveaways begin at 7pm. 21+ only, please!

Friday, September 17 is the official PRGE Pre-Party at GK! Whether you’re a PRGE vendor that’s in town early to set up, or an attendee eagerly awaiting the show’s opening on Saturday, come on down to Ground Kontrol to play games and enjoy a drink or two. Starts at 7pm. 21+ only, please!

After the PRGE auction closes on Saturday, September 18, come down to Ground Kontrol for one last night of classic gaming celebration. Bring your PRGE badge or wristband for special deals at the bar! Starts at 7pm. 21+ only, please!

We hope to see both familiar faces and new ones at Portland Retro Gaming Expo and Ground Kontrol! Let’s show everyone why Portland is the best city for classic gamers!
