Indie Game Night: Disc Jam – Thursday 3/30, 7pm

Indie Game Night - Disc Jam

Every Last Thursday, Indie Game Night invites you to play some of our favorite independently-developed video games in Ground Kontrol’s lounge. These games are made by small teams (often just a few people) and are usually retro-inspired with refined game play that’s easy to pick up in just a couple of rounds.

This month, we’re featuring Disc Jam!

DISC JAM [High Horse Entertainment]
A fast-paced action-sports game that pits 2-4 players against each other in a frantic combination of air hockey and tennis. Players scramble to retrieve and throw a glowing disc while unleashing devastating abilities and defending their end zone. An exciting blend of strategy and skill, this arcade-inspired title boasts a zany roster of characters to compete with friends both on the couch and online.

Get down here at 7 and join gamemasters Art Santana and Dylan Reiff, who will be on hand to help you get started. There’s no cost to play and no pressure to win, just grab a beer and a controller and have a blast!

Indie Game Night: Bum RushEvery Last Thursday, Indie Game Night invites you to play and preview new and unreleased independently-developed video games in Ground Kontrol’s lounge. These games are made by small teams (often just a few people) and are usually retro-inspired with refined game play that’s easy to pick up in just a couple of rounds. This month, we’re very excited to feature Bum Rush at one of our biggest Indie Game Nights ever!

BUM RUSH [Nina Freeman, Emmett Butler, Diego Garcia & Maxo]
An 8 player car combat dating sim racing game about racing your roommates while you’re on a date in order to be the first one home so that you can use it for your booty call, Bum Rush is a fast-paced party game that was originally created for the No Quarter exhibition in New York. It’s been previewed at events and parties since to great success, and tonight will be no different!

This is a rare chance to play this game prior to its official release. Not only that, but this event will be filmed for a special series on game development, so come down looking sharp and ready to party!

Indie Game Night: TinderBox Edition – Wednesday 12/30, 7pm

TinderBox seen at PAX Prime 2015This month, Indie Game Night is featuring two awesome productions from Portland’s indie game scene: TinderBox, the 4-player indie arcade cabinet, and one of its fan favorite games – Sh**ty Voltron!

Sh**ty Voltron [Jack Meade, Oliver Smith, Terence Lee, Clifton B]
The name kind of speaks for itself. Each player controls one limb, QWOP-style. The goal is to get to your Sword of Power and defeat the UFO destroying the city. Sh**ty Voltron is hilarious and hilariously difficult to conquer, but with 4 capable humans controlling this superpowered robot, can you really blame anyone but yourself? Game by Terence Lee (programming, sound), Jack Meade (art) and Oliver Smith (programming).

TinderBox [Jack Meade, Oliver Smith]
TinderBox brings multiplayer indie gaming to the arcade! This custom-built 4-player cabinet was designed by local developers Jack Meade and Oliver Smith to showcase party-friendly indie games from small teams. TinderBox has been demonstrated at PAX Prime 2015, Portland Retro Gaming Expo, Rose City Comic Con and TechFest NW, to name just a few, and we’re excited to see what you think of it!

Every Last Thursday, host and GameMaster Rich Lau sets up a variety of games for you to play, absolutely FREE! This month, we’ve got two intense actiongames!

Knight Squad (Chainawesome Games) combines the frantic gameplay of Bomberman with the fantasy-inspired maze-crawling of Gauntlet for a totally new competitive sword (or drill, or laser, or bow and arrow) fight with your friends.
Come down to Ground Kontrol to check out these and more indie game surprises, free! Hang back with a drink and a snack to watch the chaos, and jump in any time you’d like. It’s all about bringing gamers together to try something new!

Indie Game Night: Duck, Duck, Minesweeper Edition – Thursday 7/30

Dhttp://groundkontrol.com/wp-admin/edit.phpuck GameManaCollectHere at Ground Kontrol, we’re obviously big fans of making gaming a social experience. Even if you’ve got your eyes solely on the Ms. Pac-Man high score or you prefer to play pinball solo, being around other fans of arcade gaming is essential to the experience. To that end, we try to feature some games that you can absolutely play at home, but are more fun with friends and a few drinks! This month, Indie Game Night focuses on two recent releases: The fast-paced feather-flying Duck Game, and the Minesweeper-inspired puzzle battle ManaCollect!

Duck Game (Landon Podbielski / Adult Swim Games)
Enter the futuristic year of 1984, an age where ducks run wild in a frantic battle for glory. Blast your friends with Shotguns, Net Guns, Mind Control Rays, Saxophones, Magnet Guns, and much, much more. Think Adult Swim does Smash Bros.!

ManaCollect (Tagizen Clock / Fruitbat Factory)
ManaCollect is an action packed take on the classic Minesweeper as an action/puzzle game. Two contestants compete on a grid based arena to collect hidden mana by following numbered hints and unleash special attacks to drain their opponents mana.

Join us in our lounge as we explore the often retro-inspired world of independent games with your host Rich Lau! As always, it’s totally free to play – you might just find a new favorite game, and make a few friends while you’re at it!

Indie Game Night: #IDARB, Nidhogg Tournament – Thursday 2/26

Indie Game NightThis edition of Indie Game Night brings you the brand-new multiplayer game #IDARB along with a tournament for an Indie Game Night mainstay, Nidhogg!

What the heck is #IDARB? Well, it stands for “It Draws A Red Box”. What started as a simple red box presented to Twitter by developers Other Ocean eventually became an ambitious “chaotic 8-player eSport jumping jetpack future arena ball game that is as inspired by Bomberman and Smash Bros. as it is by cans of soda, paint-by-number books, and driving five miles faster than the speed limit”.

#IDARB’s basic structure is simple – get the ball, and put it in the goal. Things get intense when the competition heats up, though, with up to 8 players not only trying to score, but stop each other from scoring. There’s so much going on here, it’s nearly impossible to condense the game in a few paragraphs: #IDARB must be played to be (somewhat) understood!

The collaborative nature of #IDARB didn’t end with the release of the game – the game also features “hashbombs”, special hashtags that can be submitted via a live game’s Twitch.tv chat window or replies to the Twitter account @idarbwire! We’ll be streaming the game play, so watch out for our stream during Indie Game Night and surprise us with some hashbombs!

After #IDARB, stick around for a tournament in the hectic and highly precise fencing game Nidhogg [messhof]. We expect more than a few capable players will be here, but Nidhogg’s also a game that welcomes new players with its simple control scheme and stark-yet-striking graphics and animations. Just let Indie GameMaster Matt Hunter know you’d like to sign up, and you could walk away with some Ground Kontrol credit if you win!

WHAT: Indie Game Night featuring #IDARB and Nidhogg Tournament

WHEN: Thursday February 26, beginning at 7pm. Nidhogg tournament roughly scheduled for 9pm. Indie Game Night repeats every Last Thursday!

COVER: No cover or cost to play! Grab a drink and let Matt or another player know you’d like to play. 21+ only, since we’ve got a full bar! RSVP on Facebook and invite your friends!

Indie Game Night: SUPERFRIENDS Edition – Thursday 1/29

Super Pole RidersHOKRABARIBARIBALLThis month, we’re featuring selections from SPORTSFRIENDS! Come down and play some of the best fast-action multiplayer games with us, free in our lounge!
SPORTSFRIENDS is “a tight-knit compendium of award-winning local multiplayer games for living rooms, parties, and even backyards”, released by Die Gute Fabrik & Friends.

Featured games:

Super Pole Riders: Bennett Foddy’s Super Pole Riders is a unique physics-based blend of pole-vaulting and polo. Ride your pole, hit the goal!

Hokra: Ramiro Corbetta’s Hokra is a minimalist 2v2 game that’s equally competitive and cooperative, distilling the sports game genre down to its essentials.

BaraBariBall: Noah Sasso’s BaraBariBall is a fighting game based around aerial combat. Dunk the ball and protect your own goal!

We live in a golden age of independent game development and Portland needs a central event to showcase these games! Many games are being made to allow several people in the same room to face each other in a fun, friendly, inviting, and community driven way. Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade and musician/games writer Matt Hunter have taken up the call!

Each last Thursday of the month, Matt will host an event with the help of Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade which will showcase independently developed multiplayer games for folks to play for FREE with other patrons. Games include 2-4 player death-match, experimental, and high score races from developers from all over the world as well as local developers. We plan on hosting game-themed nights, tournaments, developer spotlights, and much more! A gaming community is far too important to let go stagnant and this is the hub we need to unify everyone who loves games of all kinds.

Above all else, we want a fun experience for those who are familiar with games as well as those who are interested in a welcoming introduction. The games we will be showing will be basic to learn but tough to master. Only the highest quality concepts get featured. We have the tough job of researching the best indie games out there and playing these games for hours to filter out what could work – and what doesn’t!

Come join us! It’s free and a great place to try out some new games while testing your mettle against other players!

Ground Kontrol serves a full bar and food menu nightly, and is 21+ only after 5pm.
