Ground Kontrol at Portland Retro Gaming Expo – Saturday 10/17 & Sunday 10/18

Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2014 - Photo by DestructoidPortland Retro Gaming Expo is the most important time of year for Pacific NW retro gaming fans: Thousands descend on the Oregon Convention Center in the name of classic games, and Ground Kontrol will be there in full force!

Each year, Ground Kontrol organizes the massive free play arcade with the support of the local arcade community, and this year’s lineup is impressive! Over 150 games will be on hand the entire weekend to play for free, and the arcade feature will stay open until midnight on Saturday evening.

In addition, we’ll have a booth with merchandise specials, including some brand-new highly-limited items and great prices on everything!

Also, it’s worth noting that we are not closing Ground Kontrol during PRGE! We’ll be open regular business hours the entire weekend, except for a private event on Sunday 10/18 from 4:30-7:30pm.

Grab your Portland Retro Gaming Expo passes now – online sales are up through October 16, and weekend passes are only $27 if you act fast!

Brackelope Presents the Supercade Pinball Knockout at PRGE – Sunday 10/6

Brackelope Supercade Knockout

This weekend, Brackelope Tournament Builder and Ground Kontrol are teaming up to bring you a pinball tournament in the Portland Retro Gaming Expo Supercade!

The tournament will be a knockout format bracket, so you’ll have more chances to play than a typical double elimination tournament. The first round kicks off at 11am on Sunday October 6. The top winners will win cash prizes, Brackelope t-shirts and Ground Kontrol gift certificates!

To sign up, just visit the Ground Kontrol booth at Portland Retro Gaming Expo between 9am-5:30pm on Saturday October 5. There’s a $5 entry fee due in cash when you sign up. Limited spots available, so don’t delay!

Ground Kontrol at Portland Retro Gaming Expo – Saturday 10/5 & Sunday 10/6

Portland Retro Gaming Expo

This weekend, when you’re not at Ground Kontrol, you better be at the Oregon Convention Center – it’s time for Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2013!

Since 2006, PRGE has brought retro gaming fans together to buy/sell/trade vintage video games and collectibles and over the years, the arcade and pinball presence has grown. Last year, Ground Kontrol partnered with PRGE to put together a massive free-play arcade area for the debut show at the Oregon Convention Center. This year, we’re stepping it up and bringing MORE games with the help of Portland Arcade Collectors! Get ready for the Supercade: Over 160 arcade and pinball games (and counting), all set to free-play.

Not only will the Supercade be open during the entire show, it will be open late on Saturday night! From 5:30pm-midnight, hang out and play games with us. As an added bonus, there will be live entertainment including a special No Pun Intendo: The 8-Bits Edition and music from Altered Beats and ComputeHer! Food and soft drinks will be available for purchase to keep you going.

Sunday morning, join us in Auditorium B for a special panel: The History of Ground Kontrol, featuring a look at Ground Kontrol over the years with its owners and management.

Of course, there’s plenty more to do at PRGE. Celebrity speakers like Pat “The NES Punk” Contri, David Crane, Rebecca Heineman, The Retronauts and lots more; tournaments including the Tetris World Championship and the Brackelope Supercade Pinball Knockout; music from DJ Switch, Mechlo, 8-Bit Weapon, ComputeHer & DJ Mr Smith; and of course the always-popular live auction!

The Supercade at PRGE would not be possible without the help of Portland Arcade Collectors, Game Over Arcade, Portland Pinball Repair and the many local collectors loaning us their games for the show. Thank you!

Your Games at PRGE!

Vintage video game hardware, arcade games, celebrity speakers, pinball, trivia, tournaments, music and more all converge at the Oregon Convention Center on October 5th & 6th: It’s time for Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2013!

Ground Kontrol is once again teaming up with PRGE! Want to help make Oregon’s best video game show even better? Sign up to be a volunteer, or contribute games from your personal collection to the Supercade – a 20,000 square foot gaming area featuring a wide range of video games and pinball tables on free play. Portland Retro Gaming Expo volunteers get free admission for the entire weekend and a special PRGE volunteer t-shirt!

Know your way around a hand truck or a control panel? There are a lot of roles to fill at PRGE’s Supercade – you can help transport games to and from the show, help with minor game issues and generally be a friendly neighborhood arcade attendant!

Game Movers: We’ll be picking up games on Thursday Oct. 3, arranging them in the convention hall on Friday Oct. 4, and returning them to their owners on Monday Oct. 7. While moving arcade games is hard work, this is also a great opportunity to learn more about arcade and pinball machines and we’ll provide transportation and meals during your shift(s), in addition to the standard PRGE volunteer benefits!

Supercade Attendants: We’ll also need volunteers to help keep the Supercade running smoothly. Depending on your level of experience, you could help make minor game fixes, report game issues, and ensure the games are being treated well. Supercade volunteers will also get opportunities to see how arcade games and pinball machines are repaired – it’s a unique chance to dig deeper into retro gaming and you’ll earn PRGE volunteer benefits, too!

If you’d like to sign up, just fill out the PRGE volunteer registration form, select “Supercade” and give us an idea of what arcade experience you’ve got. List anything and everything that will help us get an idea of your strengths, in addition to your availability on 10/3, 10/4 and 10/5 through 10/7.

If you’re an arcade or pinball collector, you can loan your games to the Supercade! Game contributors can earn free passes for them and their friends or family, in addition to exhibitor space on the floor. This is a great opportunity to promote your video game or arcade-related business and get some friends in on the fun. If you’re looking to sell your game, PRGE won’t charge a commission – just make sure it’s available to play all weekend! Get the full run down on how to contribute your game (and the general requirements) at the PRGE arcade game contribution page.

If you know any game collectors or arcade wizards that may be interested in contributing, please share this post with them!

Thanks for your support – we’re looking forward to seeing you at PRGE 2013!
