Power-Up Complete: Our Remodel Blog

We’ve create a mini-site tracking our progress as we remodel the original location, and will post updates as often as possible. Be sure to bookmark remodel.groundkontrol.com, and check back often to watch Ground Kontrol 3.0 take shape!

Yes, We Are OPEN!

Tonight, after experiencing some unanticipated problems, the GK krew opened the new Ground Kontrol Warp Zone, our new (and temporary) home away from home at 10 NW 5th, just a block from GK.  We had a huge crowd eagerly waiting outside for the doors to open, and they were rewarded with extended Happy Hour pricing and great music from DJs LED & Epor.  We had a few balky pinball tables, and Paperboy has gotten extremely dim, but otherwise it’s the same great gaming experience you expect from Ground Kontrol, just with black lights and more elbow room.

We know our new front door and entry are not up to snuff, but we hope to resolve that next week!

CLOSED Thursday December 9 and part of Friday December 10 – Remodel Insanity!

Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade will be CLOSED Thursday, December 9 to move (a very short distance) to our next temporary home at 10 NW 5th Ave.. We will still be located in the Goldsmith Building on NW 5th Ave. between Couch St. and Burnside St.

UPDATE (Thursday 12/9 3:37pm): We need a little more time to set up our new temporary home, so Ground Kontrol will be opening at 5pm on Friday, December 10.

See you then for happy hour (5-7pm), 21+ only!

How Do You Move A Bar?

Answer: Get 5 strong guys to pick it up, put 4 furniture dollies underneath it, strap the bar to them, and hope you don’t have any tight corners to go around.

Yesterday afternoon, the GK moving crew wheeled our bar across the street to The Warp Zone, our home away from home.  Less than an hour later, it was back in operation and serving up drinks to happy Christmas partygoers at the private event rental that kicked off our new (and temporary) location.  Be sure to check it out soon!

CLOSED Tuesday November 30 and part of Wednesday December 1

To allow us to move our entire arcade’s contents to our temporary home at 32 NW 5th Ave., Ground Kontrol will be CLOSED Tuesday, November 30 (all day and night) and Wednesday, December 1 (Noon-9:30pm).

Please join us at 9:30pm on Wednesday, December 1 for the unveiling of The Warp Zone, Ground Kontrol’s temporary home! For more on our remodel progress, please see these recent posts:

Thank you to everyone for your patience and flexibility. We are extremely happy we can still bring you the awesome arcade experience you love while construction is ongoing.

Please stay tuned to our website, Twitter and Facebook feeds for the latest news!

The Warp Zone – Our Temporary Home! Beginning December 1

First, the most important piece of news: Beginning Wednesday, December 1 at 9:30pm, Ground Kontrol will be temporarily relocated to 32 NW 5th Ave., less than one block away in the Goldsmith Building on the corner of NW 5th & Couch. For a Google Map of the location, click here!

Here’s why: In order to remodel our current space, we need to get everything out of the way! We’ll be demolishing some walls, creating new ones, installing new flooring, lighting, etc.  Dust and debris can shorten a game’s lifespan, and most significantly, our customers can’t play games while sledgehammers are swinging above their heads! (Although that sorta sounds like Wrecking Crew…)

We’re calling this temporary home The Warp Zone, but we’re bringing as much of the awesome Ground Kontrol experience possible along for the inter-dimensional trip: Our tremendous selection of arcade games and pinball, along with beer & wine service after 5pm, will still be available.

For a quick update on how the Ground Kontrol 3.0 remodel is progressing, please check out this blog post from The CEO. At every stage, we’ve encountered a new obstacle to overcome or puzzle to solve, fortunately, that’s what video game and pinball geeks are good at! With the help of Jessica Helgerson Interior Design and Lackey Construction, we still plan to bring you an even more amazing arcade experience in a couple of months.

So, remember: Beginning December 1st, when you arrive at Ground Kontrol’s permanent address, 511 NW Couch St., you’ll be greeted with directions to the Ground Kontrol Warp Zone.  It’s simple: Turn east, cross NW 5th Ave., turn south, and cross NW Couch St. Congratulations: You’re there!

More On GK 3.0

Some people have asked – if we’re not expanding, then why are we remodeling?

We know some of you love GK just the way it is, but we feel like it could be even better.  Things the remodel will improve:

  • The Bar – some people want liquor, and we can’t serve that without food.
  • Food – sometimes you work up an appetite playing NBA Jam, and we can’t serve that without a kitchen.
  • Seating – we’re adding a dedicated lounge area near the bar.  The tables and seating will be unlike anything you’ve seen.
  • Restrooms – we’re hoping our new restrooms will make you forget how sad our current ones are.
  • Flooring – our carpet doesn’t handle spills too well, so we’re going with LEED-certified recycled rubber flooring.
  • Ambience – TRON is one of our big influences, and our new look will put you in the TRON universe.

Sneak peak pics soon!

Ground Kontrol 3.0 Update: Bad News, Good News

What’s up with Ground Kontrol’s remodel plans? They’re still moving ahead, but we’ve encountered our share of obstacles along the way. Please read The CEO’s latest post for an update on Ground Kontrol 3.0!

Thanks for your patience, everyone!

GK 3.0 Preview: Mystery Game 05 – Revealed!

Welcome to the fifth in a series of sneak peeks into what will eventually become Ground Kontrol 3.0: bigger, better and featuring even more classic games! Throughout this series, we’ll be taking quick looks at various things like equipment, construction, design, and most importantly:  games! But we won’t be pulling up the curtain completely – rather, we’ll just give you a brief glance. To see the rest, you’ll just have to wait!

Released in the late 80s, this futuristic space shooter was brought to arcades with the help of one of gaming’s giants. Players piloted a ship through difficult stages against an all-consuming threat, collecting standard power-ups along with a unique power-up that actually attached and detached from their ship.  This additional fighting force also allowed you to exploit some weaknesses in several boss battles, after you perfected the timing each battle demanded.

Can you name the series (or a single installment in the series)? Email us your answer by Wednesday 11/17 with the subject “Mystery Game 05”! Out of the correct responses, one random person will get free admission to our next Free Play Party (11/18).

Congratulations to Josh Schonstal, whose correct answer of “R-Type” was randomly selected from our pool of correct answers! A beautifully restored R-Type will be joining Ground Kontrol 3.0’s lineup.

Whoever has the most correct answers by the end of our GK 3.0 Preview series will get a very special prize at our grand re-opening!

GK 3.0 Preview #4 – Mystery Game 04 – Revealed!

Welcome to the fourth in a series of sneak peeks into what will eventually become Ground Kontrol 3.0: bigger, better and featuring even more classic games! Throughout this series, we’ll be taking quick looks at various things like equipment, construction, design, and most importantly:  games! But we won’t be pulling up the curtain completely – rather, we’ll just give you a brief glance. To see the rest, you’ll just have to wait!

This arcade action series, obviously influenced by American action films, first hit arcades in the late ’80s. It would later become a massive success on home consoles with some excellent ports that stayed true to the spirit of the games – shooting, shooting and more shooting, with a friend by your side. The arcade original sent you through jungles, mountains (don’t fall behind!) and maze-like compounds, and eagle-eyed players would find a wide arsenal of weapons with which to dispatch scores of terrorists and perhaps an alien freak or two.  Its arcade follow-up continued the carnage, but added some vertical action and ramped up the difficulty!

Can you name the series (or a single installment in the series)? Email us your answer by Wednesday 9/29 with the subject “Mystery Game 04”! Out of the correct responses, one random person will get free admission to our next Free Play Party (9/29).

Congratulations to Ben Pownall, whose correct answer of “Contra” was randomly selected from our pool of correct answers! Both Contra and its sequel Super Contra are scheduled to join our lineup.

Whoever has the most correct answers by the end of our GK 3.0 Preview series will get a very special prize at our grand re-opening! Someone’s on a 100% streak… Is it you?
